In middle school, do not tolerate students being tardy or not being in their seat when class starts. This is a big part of their transition into high school. It's expected by their teachers and you should expect it as well.
Make sure students are in their assigned seats. Often they will switch seats and not follow the seating charts.
You're likely to have a "do now". The students are on a pattern. Keep the students on their pattern. Get them working right away after you introduce yourself.
Do attendance while they are writing in journals or writing down the days assignment.
