Greetings Everyone.
In today’s videos, we’re going to model this Loader Slot Spherical Rod Bearing in SolidWorks.
This bearing consists of a spherical ball and a body with a threaded Boss. The bearing’s lubricated by a dry film that’s coated on the spherical surface of the ball.
These bearings are typically used to on control arms found in automotive suspension and steering systems as well as aerospace control surface and landing gear systems.
In this video, you’ll learn how to model the components of the bearing and create a bearing assembly as well as how to set up realistic component appearances in Solidworks.

We’re going to use part number AMBM8 on this catalog page from New Hampshire Ball Bearings to get our base dimensions. Many of the dimensions, such as the body’s loading slot geometry and spherical inner diameter are proprietary information for NHBB, so we’re going to make assumptions for the purposes of making this video.
I’ve linked the catalog page and NHBB’s website in the description below. They have a lot of great resources, if you want to learn more about the products they offer or just bearings in general.
Ok, lets get started with our bearing body.

Body:
The first step in making our bearing body is to do a simple revolve that we’ll shave away from to create our finished product using subtractive design intent.
We’ll start by making a circle to match the spherical diameter of the body and then create our threaded end with a rectangle
We’ll merge them with a tangent line and add in a small undercut for the threads.
Now we have what I call the lollipop, a blank that we’re going to shave away material from.
We’ll start by creating the two flat faces with extrude cuts
Now we’ll create our spherical ID. We’re assuming it’s the same as the ball diameter for this presentation.
We’re also assuming the loading slot width and diameter are equal to the ball width and diameter respectively. In reality, all of these dimensions would be larger to allow clearance of the ball.
The thru bore is used to break the sharp edges of the ball cavity
We’ll add some fillets to the undercut and the body face and a chamfer to the end of the rod.
Now we have to add some threads to body. We’re going to use the thread tool, which I actually didn’t know existed until I made this video. SolidWorks has so many layers to it that it’s almost impossible to know all the tools at your disposal.
We’ll set the material to AISI 304 stainless and give the body a matte steel finish
Ball:
The first step in making our ball is to create a sphere.
We’ll then create the two flat faces using the extrude cut tool.
And create the thou bore.
Lastly we’ll add in some chamfers for the ID.
For the appearance, we’ll set it we’re going to set the end faces and chamfer edges to machine steel and the ID to Polished steel. The OD of the ball is coated with a dry film to lubricate the bearing. To simulate that, we’ll set it’s appearance to Sandblasted Iron
For our assembly we’re just going to create a simple concentric mate between the Ball OD and the bodies spherical ID. And we’ll set the face of the bearing and body to be parallel to one another.
And we are done.
