What do you do when fire restrictions or fire bans are in effect while you are overlanding and camping? You can’t make a campfire so that you can cook… and you may not be permitted to use a butane or propane camping stove. How can you cook or even heat water? In this video, I’ll share with you one of my solutions to this problem.
You will probably run into this situation more often than you think. Here in the US, both the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) implement regional or state-wide fire bans when the risk of creating a wildfire is too great. It frequently happens during the summer months in the Northwest and other parts of the U.S.
In the northwest, I couldn’t believe how many wildfires were burning in the forests and grasslands last summer. I avoided some smoke-filled areas by using GAIA GPS. It has layers showing current wildfires and smoke forecasts. But I couldn’t always avoid it and one day, I drove almost 8 hours without escaping heavy smoke.
So fire bans are necessary... and as an Overlander, it is equally important for you to be prepared for them!
