PASIGHAT, Aug 26: In a bit to draw the attention of the concerned authorities toward the concern of Gaon Burahs and Gaon Burihs, the Gaon Burah and Burihs from Bogong areas of Pasighat today called on to Sonalika Jiwani, Dy. Commissioner, Pasighat while presenting some traditional items as a token of gift for Solung festival which is to begin from September 1st next.
The team of Gaon Burahs and Burihs from Bogong region, Pasighat was led by Dr. Takeng Taggu, President, All Adi Belt GB Welfare Association and Shri Ote Rukbo, President, Bogong Block GB Association accompanied by other GBs. This was the village heads' maiden visit to DC Pasighat after the incumbent DC Sonalika Jiwani took charge of the office. With festive mood the GBs presented traditional Gale, Egiin etc to the DC as a token of gift while appealing the DC to support and strengthen the grassroots level conduct and functioning of Gaon Burahs and Burihs in the district for fair judgement of any village disputes and issues.
Dr. Taggu said that DC has understood the pitiable condition of the GBs in wearing thick woollen redcoats during hot summer days and has assured to make some arrangement for light and thinner redcoats for the GBs which if materialized will relieve the GBs from heat. The team of GBs also briefed the DC about the outcome of the recent 2nd General Conference of All Adi Belt GB Welfare Association that was held on 21st August 2025 at Engo Takar Dere here at Pasighat.
While talking to this scribe, Dr. Taggu said that the appointment of GBs by the government have been done since the British days under the Assam Frontier Regulation Act 1945 and the role of Gaon Burahs and Gaon Burihs in the village level has immense importance which act as grassroot level court in the three-tier traditional court like Traditional Village Customary Court (1st), Territorial inter-village customary court (2nd) and Apex traditional customary court (3rd). “Though the village matters are resolved under the leadership of Head Gaon Burahs in the village, there is no clear mention of who will lead the inter-village and apex traditional customary court in the recently amended laws of AFR 1945 in the year 2023” added Taggu.
He said that very soon the team of All Adi Belt GB Welfare Association led by Dr. Taggu as President, GB Tapat village (Dambuk) Getem Saring as Secretary, Tajir Gamoh (GB Rumgong) as V/P and Makpel Megu (GB Tajum/5 Mile) as AGS will meet Commissioner, Law & Justice to appeal the authorities to look at addressing the gaps and loopholes in the amended act for better and fair trials in the traditional courts of inter-village and apex customary courts.
