Cause I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo, I'm a Victorian gentleman.

Call them: Eccentrics, Public Characters, "Originals", Quacks, or even Oddities. People inevitably take note of them, high or low. "Eccentricity" was once identified as a novel and endearing element of social life in the United Kingdom and United States. "Character" attracted the interest of philosophers from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Thomas Carlyle, writers from Charles Dickens to William Blake, and personalities as high ranking as George III. Newspapers carried folklore and rumor of local characters to all eyes. There was a cottage industry of articles and biographies reporting on these odd fellows (men and women) to the masses. The literate public was both unendingly cruel and boundlessly empathetic.
The 1800s saw a great circulation of books with titles like: "The Eccentric Mirror", "The Eccentric Magazine", and the most famous "English Eccentrics and Eccentricities". It was cheap entertainment mixed with informative anecdotes. The tales were sensational and featured names both familiar and unfamiliar: the minister Job Orton sat beside writer Samuel Johnson in prominence. Despite writing dictionaries, Job Orton had a larger article than Johnson. Those "Eccentric People" were mad nobles, writers of decadent novels, and even incredibly influential scientists with crippling social anxiety. Here's a collection of characters people found remarkable for their oddness more than two-hundred years ago.
Won't you walk through the dreary streets of London with the Pudding Man?
