Artistic residencies and intercultural projects can be more than temporary trips — they can become deep processes of discovering one’s identity, exploring geopolitical tensions, and learning about everyday forms of coexistence. The discussion focused on what it means to work in a transcontinental context — the risks involved, the opportunities it brings, and the questions one should ask before writing the first line of a script.

Central to the conversation were topics such as the body as an archive, working within local contexts, and ways to avoid superficiality in projects based on exchanges between the Global North and the Global South.

Dr. Małgorzata Miśniakiewicz spoke with Oliwia Bosomtwe (writer, author of Jak biały człowiek. Opowieść o Polakach i innych / Like a White Man: A Story About Poles and Others), Márton Gábor Csaba (project coordinator of Deconfining, Pro Progressione, Hungary), and Roland Jacek Chojnacki (Director of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and Promotion of Poland).

The discussion took place on June 22, 2025, during the 23rd SURVIVAL Art Review, organized by the Art Transparent Foundation. The meeting was part of the international project “Deconfining”, carried out with the support of the Creative Europe Programme.

DECONFINING seeks to forge new and equal cultural connections by engaging cultural practitioners, policymakers, and artists working in the fields of performing arts, media arts, and visual arts, alongside universities and audiences from both continents. The project aspires to create new forms of intercontinental artistic and cultural cooperation, contributing to a more nuanced, multi-perspective understanding of barriers within cross-continental collaboration. The overarching goal is to move beyond paternalistic and colonial mindsets toward a strong participatory approach, ensuring better access to information about intercontinental mobility and co-creation.
