This is the cemetery where, inter alia, Sir Arthur Charles Clarke lies buried. It is additionally known among the locals as the Borella Cemetery, Borella being a locality within Colombo. The name "Colombo" is, of course, the family name of the person usually known to the world as Christopher Columbus. Many places are named Columbus, e.g. Columbus, Ohio but Sri Lanka goes against this anglicizing tendency by naming its capital city in accordance with the great man's baptismal name in the original Portuguese.
Sri Lanka has a long and disturbing colonial history, having being taken over by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, in turn. The British gave the island "independence" on 4 February 1947 after, reportedly, pressure had been brought on that metropolitan country.
The CCC bears the residue of the island's past and few indications of its future. It started as a place where British colonists and military servicemen were buried but grew in scope so that a good number of Colombo residents, bar Muslims, got to be buried there. Christians, Hindus and Buddhists are interred within this cemetery.
The inscriptions on the gravestones are a source of fascination and often give clues about the kind of lives the deceased had lived.
If you ever find yourself in Colombo and have time on your hands do visit this cemetery as it possesses many facets and points of interest.
