This single is the first and only time the Pet Shop Boys worked with Pete Burns, and it's results were mixed across both artists diverse fan base. The single mix was ultimately re-released on Dead Or Alive's 2016 Box Set, "Sophisticated Boom Box", but the Extended Dance and Instrumental Mixes remain available only on that long-sold out limited edition CD single.
The Pet Shop Boys wrote this song following the 2002 episode of “BBC Diners” featuring Pete Burns , and intended for him to record it from the beginning. It was Pete's first truly solo single of his career, and the second (and final) single for the PSB's own independent label, “Olde English”. Released in June of 2004, it reached #75 in the UK charts during a two-week run.
Following Pete's death in 2016, Neil had this to say about their time working together: “I thought we made quite a good record with him. He was a good singer. No-one ever mentions that. We were very impressed what a good singer he was- he had a very, very strong voice. He was also very obsessed by stardom, and transforming, and surgery, and all the rest of it. The first time I ever met Pete Burns, I was walking down Long Acre in Covent Garden and Pete Burns shouted, 'Neil! You're the Marlene Dietrich of pop!', because Marlene Dietrich was famous for not doing much onstage.”
The Pet Shop Boys released the demo version of this song (featuring Neil's original lyrics and vocal recording) on the "Further Listening" version of their album, "Release", which is worth hunting down to compare how Pete changed the lyrics to the versions heard here.
