-Capillaries of the glomerulus form an efferent arteriole instead of a venule because the glomerulus is not meant for oxygen exchange.
Its main function is filtration, not oxygen delivery. Therefore, blood leaving the glomerulus must still be rich in oxygen so it can supply oxygen to the renal tubules through peritubular capillaries and vasa recta.
Need to supply oxygen to renal tubules
-Renal tubules (especially proximal tubules and thick ascending limb) are highly active metabolically.
-They require a continuous and rich oxygen supply for:
-Active reabsorption of Na⁺
-Transport of solutes and water
-Oxygen delivery to these tubules is done by:
Peritubular capillaries (cortical nephrons)
Vasa recta (juxtamedullary nephrons)
