Mike McClennan's last game coaching St Helens against Hull KR at Knowsley Road. McClennan had come so close to leading St Helens to the Championship title the previous season. He'd succeeded Alex Murphy as coach installing defensive resolve into his side and some innovative attacking moves like Stevo's favourite, the criss-cross.
The decision to sell Gary Connolly to Wigan alongside the loss of Kevin Ward led to an underwhelming 1993/94 season that was a disappointment to all concerned with the Saints. There was also no overseas player brought to Saints of the quality of Jarrod McCracken as had been the case the previous season. An opening day defeat against Hull KR was a harbinger of things to come but Saints managed to claim some form of revenge for that loss in this reverse fixture and a win for McClennan in his last game as Saints head coach.
