Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino), located just outside Rome, Italy, is one of the busiest airports in Europe and serves as a primary gateway for both international and domestic travelers. Positioned about 16 miles southwest of Rome’s city center, Fiumicino is strategically located to manage a large volume of air traffic, making it an essential hub in Italy’s aviation network.

The airport boasts four active runways arranged in a parallel and intersecting configuration: 16L/34R, 16R/34L, 07/25, and 08/26. This setup ensures efficient takeoffs and landings, handling the significant passenger traffic that Fiumicino regularly sees. With approximately 43 million passengers passing through annually, Fiumicino ranks as one of the top ten busiest airports in Europe, and is a critical gateway for flights to and from Italy.

I filmed around the entire airport, although found the little cafe beside runway 16R/32L to be my favourite spot!

Fiumicino serves as a major hub for several Italian airlines, notably ITA Airways, which has a strong operational presence there. Other key carriers based at Fiumicino include low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Vueling. In addition, international airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, and Emirates contribute to the airport’s wide-reaching global connectivity, emphasizing its role in international air travel.

In global rankings, Fiumicino consistently ranks among the top 50 busiest airports worldwide. It typically sits within the top 20 in terms of passenger volume, with fluctuations year by year based on various factors. While Fiumicino doesn’t always make the top ten, its importance as a major European hub remains undisputed, and its combination of modern infrastructure, airline presence, and international traffic solidifies its place as one of the busiest and most important airports in Europe.

The aim of this video is to highlight this world-class airport, showcasing it from various perspectives around the airport. While Fiumicino isn’t the easiest airport to view planes from, it’s definitely possible, and I enjoy capturing this unique experience in the video!
