In this episode of the Yamasatoumi Journal Club, we delve into the paper "Use of Artificial Intelligence in Peer Review Among Top 100 Medical Journals" published in JAMA Network Open. We'll explore the impact of generative AI on academic peer review with Dr. Satomi.

This study investigated the policies of the top 100 medical journals regarding the use of AI in peer review. The results showed that while 78% of journals have established some form of guidelines for AI, the content of these policies varies widely. Notably, 46 journals explicitly prohibit the use of AI, and over 90% prohibit uploading manuscripts to AI tools during the review process, highlighting significant concerns about confidentiality. Even when AI use is permitted, it is often under strict conditions, such as disclosure of use and adherence to authorship guidelines, suggesting that AI's role is currently limited.
