The First Aspiration is a modern erhu and piano/orchestral composition by Chinese composer Li Bochan, written in 2019 for the 12th China Golden Bell Award for Erhu Performance. The piece reflects the theme of the pure, original aspiration in one’s heart. Structured in a compound ternary form, it blends traditional Chinese musical expression with Western symphonic techniques. The erhu opens the piece with a delicate, lyrical melody symbolizing an innocent dream, gradually building in intensity as orchestral elements join, representing growth, resilience, and the expansion of vision. Emotionally, the music evolves from personal introspection to a powerful collective spirit, mirroring a journey from a small stream to a mighty river. Li describes the work as a tribute to the strength found in holding onto one’s ideals. With its fusion of Eastern aesthetics and Western form, the piece serves as both a technical showcase and a deeply moving reflection on staying true to one’s inner values amid life’s challenges.
