What is G/HLPA & GR/HLAA? And why is it all over my rum bottles?

This video is just an excuse for me to talk about esters and congeners and the chemical composition of spirits! You've probably seen "g/hlpa", "gr/hlpa", "gr/hlaa", etc. many times before on rum labels. Maybe you know what it stands for, but aren't sure exactly what it means. It might just be a number you look for to assess how funky a rum is (bigger is better, right?). But I thought it would do a deep dive on these units of concentration that we see so often. What does it mean? Why do we use these units? When did we start using these units? What does this mean for flavors? And how do you go from ppm (parts per million) to grams per hectoliter of pure alcohol (g/hlpa)?
