In this webinar, Akhila Pydah and Dr Shailaja Menon will present insights from a nationwide landscaping study on Multilingual Education (MLE) undertaken by Tata Trusts between February and April 2025. Drawing on expert consultations, organisational interviews, field visits across four states and extensive desk research, the study maps existing MLE efforts across India. The findings highlight pressing challenges, including the dominance of early exit transitional models, the relative lack of approaches for mixed-language classrooms and the narrow framing of MLE as only tribal language education. The speakers will also share a set of strategic recommendations to strengthen the field, covering areas such as implementation design, professional development, material creation and research.
