The 15-foot-tall gateway of West Fort is a picture of neglect. The plaster of the intricately built structure, which is more than 250 years old, has peeled off, exposing the brickwork underneath. Now, authorities have tied a plastic sheet to prevent rain from damaging the monument further. Built by the erstwhile king of Travancore, Marthanda Varma in 1747, it is one of the four main gateways to the fort area of the city, where the famous Sree Padmanabhaswami Temple and several palaces and other monuments are located. However, the state govt has not taken any steps to preserve it.
