This month’s Mississippi School Spotlight video features Key Elementary School in the Jackson Public School District.
Key Elementary was recently removed from the state’s list of Literacy Support Schools. Literacy Support Schools are assigned literacy coaches because they have the lowest reading achievement levels in the state.
Key Elementary had been working with a literacy coach for the past four years. Because of its sustained student growth and achievement in 3rd grade reading and other indicators, Key Elementary has “graduated” from literacy support.
The Literacy-Based Promotion Act of 2013 created the coaching model to help teachers become more effective reading instructors. Coaches working closely with teachers and school leaders to improve instructional strategies and to ensure a school climate that advances literacy and academic goals.
This video will show you how literacy support can affect school improvement efforts.
