Sara Gore welcomes viewers to a holiday edition of NBC's Open House, beginning in the elegant Chelsea apartment of textile designer and entrepreneur Christopher Hyland. He and his partner Constantino Zeta guide guests through a sequence of gracious rooms where seasonal decoration has been placed with care. In the entrance hall, garlands frame the doors and wreaths brighten the sconces before the visit moves to the double drawing room, shaped by baseless fluted Sicilian columns that echo the Greek Revival style. Constantino’s arrangements of flowers, golden wreaths, and mantel decor bring a festive glow to the space. The tour continues into the south drawing room where a commanding floor arrangement and a statue of the Psyche of Capri set the tone before the dining room opens to reveal a table prepared for Christmas Eve. Hyland shares treasured objects throughout the apartment, from a sterling silver cachepot to gilded accents and lanterns. The living room concludes the visit with a tree filled with ornaments gathered from friends and travels, comfortable lighting, and the promise of holiday brunch after gifts are opened.
The next stop is Little Falls, New Jersey, where interior designer Blanche Garcia presents her contemporary ranch style home. She introduces an open plan interior organized around a tall tree placed beneath a skylight, surrounded by handmade paper ornaments crafted by her family. Soft layers of sheepskins and rugs create relaxed seating for celebrations. Garcia then unveils a lively tablescape filled with natural branches, pine cones, sweets, and colorful accents that appear throughout the home. A white brick fireplace anchors the gathering area with Italian glass lighting, pine boughs, and stockings for every member of the family, including their puppy Rory Sparkle.
From there, Sara journeys to Scotland for a visit to Cromlix, a stunning Victorian mansion hotel co-owned by Kim Murray and her husband, tennis champion Andy Murray. Kim introduces the grounds, complete with resident chickens and a tennis court, before exploring the kitchen garden that supports the hotel’s seasonal menus led by executive head chef James. Indoors, guests are welcomed in a reception room enriched by original details and vivid upholstery. The garden entrance connects the dining rooms and the bar and features a piano and a growing collection of works by David Shrigley. Kim also shares the billiards room with its inviting atmosphere and popular jars of sweets. The tour concludes with two of the hotel’s distinctive suites, including one with a botanical palette and another with a turret window seat and delicate textiles.
Back in New York, the holiday tour continues in a parlor level Brooklyn Heights apartment designed by Fiona Byrne. She reveals original architectural features that complement her playful and minimal approach to decoration. A faux fire fixture brings warmth to the restored fireplace while wrapped boxes and candles frame the hearth. She points out a cherished snow globe shaped like an Irish telephone box and stockings in her favorite colors. In the living room, an artificial tree stands between tall windows and is dressed with ornaments that reflect her love of New York and Ireland, including miniature taxis, subway cars, cottages, post boxes, and tiny Aran jumpers knitted by her mother and aunt. Colorful lights and vintage furnishings build on her affection for seventies design and the comfort of nostalgic pieces.
The final home belongs to food stylist and creative director Marjorie Artieres, who lives on the Lower East Side. Her apartment displays the concrete ceilings and tall windows of its brutalist design. A sculptural Togo sofa defines the living area while stacks of stools expand the dining table for gatherings. Layers of greenery near a garden facing window soften the structure of the space. Artieres moves to her kitchen, where she demonstrates how she prepares pretzel flowers that appear at events catered by Pinch Food Design. After baking and dressing the pretzels with herbs and edible blossoms, she places them in a simple vase for serving. The visit concludes at the Pinch Food Design studio in Chelsea, where the team works across a professional kitchen, workshop, tasting room, and design space beneath a chandelier formed from hundreds of wine glasses. Artieres reflects on a life shaped by food and design across both home and work.
