A woman is found dead in a freezing stairwell at Barton Freight Services—no witnesses, no usable camera footage, and a phone missing from an otherwise untouched purse. The police have plenty of noise… but one detail is too perfect to be real:
“She left at five o’clock sharp. I watched her go.”
Nero Wolfe hears that sentence and immediately knows it was written, not remembered. He sends Archie Goodwin into the freight office to chase the lie—because in January, mistakes don’t disappear. They become records.
What follows is a tight chain of evidence: badge logs that contradict the statement, a camera “ticket” filed at the worst possible minute, a locked records cage accessed with an override code, an elevator stop nobody can explain, a stairwell door greased to close silently, and a missing notebook destroyed in panic. When Wolfe sets a trap with a fake “phone discovery” leak, the guilty man moves… and the dead woman’s phone floats back to the surface.
