Are you a yoga teacher who's been injured practicing Yoga exactly the way you were taught?
You are not alone! In this video I react to Diane Bruni's story of a severe hip injury she suffered after more than a decade of practicing Ashtanga. Diane opened the first yoga studio in Toronto in the late 1990's and was a well-known teacher and trainer for decades.
She learned a lot from her injury, but it is was a long slow healing process. What she needed to heal from was her disillusionment with her mentors and the other teachers who told her knee pain was a necessary experience in Ashtanga, "You have to break the knees," they said. She was also told the knee pain was because her hips were too tight, so she went on to break those too with hip openers.
She mentions that she had to hide the fact she was in pain so she could keep teaching. There's a lot of shame in Yoga around this - it is a common theme in the yoga world.
Why are people breaking their bodies for the sake of the practice? Why are people literally pulling themselves apart? What are we trying to do in yoga?
Love to hear your thoughts!
Denise
