Is The Chery iCAUR 03 iWD The Cheapest Legit Off-Road Capable EV?

The Chery iCAUR 03 iWD is a 4WD electric SUV off-roader with Defender inspired looks that is sure to turn heads, especially with the full body kit costing around RM20,000 or USD4,724.

The iCAUR 03 comes in 2 variants. Apart from the iWD/AWD, it also comes in a 2WD/RWD. The latter has less horses and torque (275 hp/385 Nm vs 181 hp/220 Nm), a smaller battery (69.8 kWh vs 55.7 kWh) but it does have slightly more range (342 km vs 362 km WLTP). For an off-roader, we find that range a limiting factor. On an ICE vehicle, you could bring along auxiliary fuel tanks. For EVs, you might need to bring along a small generator...with with sufficient amount of fuel.

However, you could plan your journey well and charge the iCAUR 03 right before you go off the beaten track.

The iCAUR 03 comes with V2L and if you opt for the full body kit, you get a side ladder which leads to the roof rack. The body kit also features wider wheel arches with fake vents, an additional compartment at the side and matte film coating.

The boot is rather small at 264 L but you do get a storage compartment attached to the outside of the tailgate.

Price wise, the 2WD was expected to be priced at RM145,000, while the iWD was estimated to be priced at RM155,000. But at launched, they were priced at RM119,800 for the 2WD and RM129,800 for the iWD. This makes the iCAUR 2WD and iWD the cheapest legit off-road capable EV vehicles you can buy.
