Matthew Barbato, then 36, had no reason to believe he had cancer. The father of three worked out regularly, kept a healthy diet and maintained an active lifestyle. When he noticed blood in his stool, his wife urged him to get it checked out. A rectal exam and stool sample came up negative, so his doctor ordered a colonoscopy, which detected what appeared to be a precancerous tumor in his lower colon. Matthew was referred to Frank Caliendo, MD, Director of Colorectal Surgery at Mount Sinai South Nassau. A biopsy revealed that the tumor was malignant, and an MRI indicated that Matthew’s cancer was stage III as it had spread to his lymph nodes, so his physicians determined that Matthew needed preoperative chemotherapy to try and shrink the tumor before attempting to surgically remove it. When Matthew completed his treatment course, Dr. Caliendo performed surgery to remove the area of Matthew’s colon where the tumor was located as well as his lymph nodes and found no evidence of any remaining cancer. Matthew, now 38 and cancer free, urges others to get screened and pay attention to any symptoms you may experience.
