I tried to find some of Slovenia's Italian speakers... Before World War 2, the Istrian peninsula, now shared between Slovenia and Croatia, was home to more than 300,000 Italian speakers. In 2025, that number is estimated to be at closer to 20,000, with only about 3,000 of those Italians living in Slovenia... Join me as we try to meet some of them

The region of Istria has a rich history spanning across several different empires and countries, from Ancient Rome to Venice, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia, and modern-day Slovenia. This is the first of two videos I filmed in Istria in April, 2025, with the 2nd (from the Croatian side of the border) coming soon :)
Thanks for watching!
