In ancient times, through the path of yoga, meditation, and penance, many enlightened beings sanctified this land with their divine presence.
Among them was a great yogi — Machhindranath.
It is said that once Lord Shiva himself was teaching the secrets of yoga to Goddess Parvati. At that time, a devoted seeker, who was meditating inside the belly of a fish, overheard this divine knowledge.
That seeker was none other than Machhindranath.
In that divine moment, he attained the sacred wisdom of yoga.
And hence, he was named Machhindranath — meaning “the yogi born from a fish.”
Machhindranath performed intense penance for many years.
But one day, he reached a beautiful kingdom called Meendesha.
There, upon seeing the royal palace, the queen, and the grandeur of the kingdom, his mind became enchanted.
Gradually, he got absorbed in worldly pleasures and drifted away from the spiritual path of yoga.
When his disciple, Gorakhnath, came to know that his revered guru had become lost in worldly attachment, he couldn’t accept it.
Gorakhnath resolved, “I will bring my guru back to the path of yoga!”
So, in the form of a young boy, Gorakhnath entered the royal palace.
Through songs, poems, and tales of yoga, he touched his guru’s inner consciousness.
Slowly, the divine memory of yoga returned to Machhindranath.
Realizing his mistake, Machhindranath bowed before Gorakhnath and once again embraced the life of penance and meditation.
According to a legend, during that time, Machhindranath’s body was lying in deep meditation inside a cave, while his soul had entered the king’s body.
That very cave is believed to be located on Vikhara Hill.
It was there that Gorakhnath meditated and, through his yogic power, brought his guru’s soul back into its original body — thus restoring Machhindranath to life.
Even today, reaching that cave is extremely difficult.
The cave is not easily visible from afar, and only a few devoted followers dare to visit its entrance.
Inside, there lies a narrow underground passage that goes deep into the mountain.
It is said that no human has ever reached its end, because as one goes deeper, the oxygen level decreases, causing suffocation and forcing one to return.
Therefore, it is advised that no one should visit the cave without the permission of Ganeshnath Maharaj, the local guardian saint of the site.
