砂かけ祭は、奈良県北葛城郡河合町の廣瀬大社で毎年2月11日（建国記念の日）に開催される、五穀豊穣と雨乞いを祈願する伝統的なお祭りです。田植えの所作を模した「お田植え祭」の中で行われ、参加者が互いに砂をかけ合うことからこの名で呼ばれています。
歴史
砂かけ祭は、1300年以上の歴史を持つと言われています。日本書紀にもその起源に関する記述があり、古くから農民の間で行われてきた農耕儀礼が発展したと考えられています。
祭り内容
砂かけ祭は、大きく分けて「殿上の儀」と「庭上の儀」の2部で構成されています。
殿上の儀
午前10時30分から拝殿内で行われ、苗代作りと苗代巡り、田植えの所作が行われます。
庭上の儀
午後2時から拝殿前の広場で行われ、広場に青竹を4本立て、しめ縄を張って田んぼに見立てます。田人と牛役が登場し、田植えの所作を行った後、太鼓の合図で田人・牛と参拝者が互いに砂をかけ合います。砂を多くかけ合えばかけるほど雨が降ると言われ、豊作になるとされています。

The Sunakake Festival at Hirose Taisha Shrine
The Sunakake Festival, held annually on February 11th (National Foundation Day) at Hirose Taisha Shrine in Kawai Town, Nara Prefecture, is a traditional festival祈願 for a bountiful harvest and rain. It is held as part of the "Otaue Festival," which simulates rice planting, and is named for the participants throwing sand at each other.
History
The Sunakake Festival is said to have a history of over 1,300 years. There are descriptions of its origins in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), and it is thought to have evolved from agricultural rituals that have been performed by farmers since ancient times.
Festival Content
The Sunakake Festival is largely divided into two parts: the "Denjo no Gi" and the "Teijo no Gi."
Denjo no Gi
Held from 10:30 AM in the main hall, this ritual involves the creation of rice seedlings, a procession of the seedlings, and the act of planting rice.
Teijo no Gi
Held from 2:00 PM in the plaza in front of the main hall, four green bamboo poles are erected in the plaza, and a sacred rope is stretched to resemble a rice field. After the field workers and the "ox" role appear and perform the act of planting rice, participants throw sand at each other to the beat of a drum. It is said that the more sand that is thrown, the more rain will fall, leading to a bountiful harvest.
