Clay is part way through his river journey and he and his group have paused to rest in the National Wildlife Refuge, which is also part of the American Prairie Reserve. The APR has an ambitious goal: to create a 3.5 million acre buffalo commons where more than 30,000 bison can roam freely without ever encountering a fence.
A vision of the Great Plains as Lewis and Clark might have seen them.
