Chapter 7 Summary

The seventh to the twelfth chapters lay down a large metaphysical statement of the nature of the Divine Being and on that foundation closely relate and synthetise knowledge and devotion. just as the first part of the Gita related and synthetised works and knowledge in giving the primary basis of its teachings.

I. The Two Natures (1-14)

The Gita makes the distinction between the two Natures, the phenomenal and the spiritual. Here is the first new metaphysical idea of the Site which helps it to start from the notions of the Sankhya philosophy and yet exceed them and give to their terms a Vedantic significance.

II. The Synthesis of Devotion and Knowledge (15-30)

The Gita is not a treatise of metaphysical philosophy. It seeks the highest truth for the highest practical utility. Thus it turns the philosophic truth given in the opening section of this chapter into a first starting-point for the unification of works. knowledge and devotion.

1-6 / The lower and the higher Nature.

7-15 / Comprehensive Knowledge of the Divine lmmanence.

16-19 / The four kinds of God lovers, the supreme vision of the jr’iani‘lohakta.

20-27 / The worship of gods by the ignorant.

28-30 / Hints to Integral Knowledge.

Verses 11 - 15

00:45 - బలం బలవతాం చాహం కామరాగవివర్జితమ్ ।
ధర్మావిరుద్ధో భూతేషు కామోఽస్మి భరతర్షభ ।। 11 ।।

balaṁ balavatāṁ cāhaṁ kāmarāgavivarjitam,
dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo'smi bharatarṣabha.

I am the strength of the strong devoid of desire and liking. I am in beings the desire which is not contrary to dharma, O Lord of the Bharatas.

02:08 - యే చైవ సాత్త్వికా భావా రాజసాస్తామసాశ్చ యే।
మత్త ఏవేతి తాన్విద్ధి న త్వహం తేషు తే మయి ।। 12 ।।

ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye,
matta eveti tānviddhi na tvahaṁ teṣu te mayi.

And as for the secondary subjective becomings of Nature, bhāvaḥ which are Sāttvika, Rājasika and Tāmasika, they are verily from me, but I am not in them, it is they that are in Me.

02:46 - త్రిభిర్గుణమయైర్భావైరేభిః సర్వమిదం జగత్ ।
మోహితం నాభిజానాతి మామేభ్యః పరమవ్యయమ్ ।। 13 ।।

tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṁ jagat,
mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam.

By these three kinds of becoming which are of the nature of the gunas, this whole world is bewildered and does not recognise Me supreme beyond them and imperishable.

04:11 - దైవీ హ్యేషా గుణమయీ మమ మాయా దురత్యయా ।
మామేవ యే ప్రపద్యంతే మాయామేతాం తరంతి తే ।। 14 ।।

daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā,
māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṁ taranti te.

This is my divine Maya of the gunas and it is hard to overcome; those cross beyond it who approach Me.

06:01 - న మాం దుష్కృతినో మూఢాః ప్రపద్యంతే నరాధమాః ।
మాయయాపహృతజ్ఞానా ఆసురం భావమాశ్రితాః ।। 15 ।।

na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ,
māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṁ bhāvamāśritāḥ.

The evil-doers attain not to Me, souls bewildered, low in the human scale; for their knowledge is reft away from them by Maya and they resort to the nature of being of the Asura.
