[KiniNews] Sisters in Islam (SIS) expressed gratitude and relief after the Federal Court allowed its appeal to challenge a Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) fatwa declaring the organisation deviant.
Speaking to reporters immediately after today’s court decision, SIS executive director Rozana Isa said the ruling proves they have a legitimate right under the Federal Constitution to voice their views and champion Muslim women’s rights in Malaysia.
“For nearly 11 years, we have gone through this process to seek justice, and finally we have received confirmation that our organisation has rights protected by the Federal Constitution to continue speaking out,” she said.
Meanwhile, in a separate story, the lawyer representing Yusoff Rawther has taken a swipe at PKR Youth members allegedly “masquerading as NGOs” after a police report was lodged against the former research assistant to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
This was following a group of NGOs lodging a police report accusing Yusoff of having links to the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad.
