Dr. Giulio Pergola, an Investigator at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, thinks of his schizophrenia research in the context of true crime. He's the detective. The motive is a person's genetic risk for mental illness. The weapon is how the brain works—or doesn't work, in some cases. The body is the diagnosis, which is complex in schizophrenia. Doctors can't look at a brain image or a certain gene to tell if a patient has schizophrenia. Instead, it's a polygenic disorder, meaning it involves hundreds of genes. Dr. Pergola's work brings us closer to finding the key genes responsible for schizophrenia to aid in diagnosis and enable new drugs that more effectively treat the disease.
