William MacVicar was born in Massachusetts. At the age of 18, MacVicar volunteered to join the Army Air Corps. After joining up and taking classification tests, MacVicar began training to become a pilot. After the completion of his training, MacVicar was sent to Sioux City, Iowa to meet his crew and begin phase training. He was assigned to be the co-pilot for crew #31, 569th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. After the completion of their training, the crew flew to Scotland before being transported to the air base at Framlingham, England to begin their deployment. MacVicar flew 16 combat missions by the time the war in Europe ended. During his interview MacVicar talks about being wounded in action by flak.
