Gangaikonda Cholapuram is an architectural marvel built by Rajendra Chola I of Chola dynasty in the 11th century.
This temple is a part of the three "Great Living Chola temples" and a designated Unesco World Heritage site.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and represents Chola dynasty's grandeur.
This temple was built to commemorate Rajendra Chola I's victory over the Pala Dynasty in the Gangetic Plains. He brought back water from the Ganges River to consecrete the city and its temple, hence the name "Gangaikonda" (conqueror of the Ganges).
Today, on 27th July, 2025, we celebrate 1000 years of Rajendra Chola I 's Maritime expedition to Southeast Asia and, the Construction of this temple.
