I'm Aditya Vardhan. Back with a documentary based on another taboo. It's dedicated to the Courtesansof India typically known as Tawaifs. I'm playing a role of a Tawaif and I'm certainly honored. Tawaifs were Women, but in this video, I'm identifying myself as a Tawaif.
It's generally thought that Tawaifs are prostitutes which is certainly a fallacy. Tawaifs were artists just like us. Associating the word 'prostitute' with their name took away the honored art from them.They no longer are comprehended for their art (Kathak, Dadra, Thumri, Ghazal, Poetry and many more).
I have done plenty of research for months to come up with something trustworthy. I read books like Tawaifnama by Saba Deewani, Umrao Jaan Ada By Mirza Hadi Ruswa, Ye Kothewaliyan By Amritlal Nagar.
I also watched interviews of Manjari Chaturvedi on Courtesans Of India.
I just want to encourage sort some of the myths. My intention isn't to hurt someone. It's a sensitive issue indeed. I have tried my best to do justice with the Great Artists of India and have no intention to hurt the sentiments of people of any community.
