This is Episode 6 of our multi-episode Poor Man’s Hangar Tour series. Here, we continue where Episode 5 left off with more coverage of the redesigned high-horsepower post-World War II Curtiss-Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9 Series aircraft engine, with relevant coverage of its identically-constructed, downsized little brother, the R-1300 Cyclone 7 Series engine. We summarize the remaining “primary” aircraft these engines powered, including the North American T-28 Trojan evolution, the Sikorsky H-19 and H-34 helicopters, and the Grumman carrier-borne twins, The S-2 Tracker, C-1 Trader, and E-1B Trade that played different but interconnected roles in support of the US Navy’s worldwide fleets from the 1950s into the 1970s.
Planned future episodes will move further up the horsepower ladder culminating with the 3,800 horsepower, 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major that powered the C-124C Globemaster II and the Convair B-36J Peacemaker strategic bomber that were both dominant in the 1950s.
