The MFEM (Modular Finite Element Methods) project provides high-order mathematical calculations for large-scale scientific simulations. Held on September 10-11, 2025, the fifth annual MFEM community workshop brought together users and developers for a review of software features and the development roadmap, a showcase of technical talks and applications, student lightning talks, Q&A, and a visualization contest.
Pierson Guthrey of LLNL gave this talk. High-dimensional kinetic equations, such as those arising in radiation transport and Vlasov models, present significant computational challenges due to the curse of dimensionality. He presented a novel framework that combines the MFEM finite element library with the BoBa tensor network package to construct finite element tensor network solvers for these complex systems. He further discussed the architectural design for coupling finite element discretizations with tensor network representations, enabling efficient handling of high-dimensional state spaces.
