Finishing your exercise routine or running with an adequate cool down will maximize your benefits and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness. Delayed onset muscle soreness typically appears a few hours after cessation of exercise. It may last 24-48 hours, depending on the exercise intensity and your experience with exercise.
After a run, I like to perform core strengthening exercises before stretching. 3 way planks are great at improving core strength and endurance. I think of this as "icing on the cake" after a run.
I will then perform a stretching routine very similar to this video after the core exercise(s). I focus on major muscle groups that are involved with running. Performing this cool down routine will allow your heart rate and breathing to recover to pre exercise levels.
Pro-tip: put the headphones in and enjoy that post-exercise endorphin rush. Reflect on your exercise routine or run and appreciate how well it felt. Soon, exercise and running will be a drug and you'll reap the tremendous benefits of regular exercise!
I hope you enjoy this video.
