Blowing TimberHP Wood Fiber Insulation - Historic Reno Series (week 24)

We're blowing wood fiber insulation into our 200-year-old historic renovation—pretty cool, right?! Specifically, we're blowing TimberFill by TimberHP In this video, we break down the three different types of insulation we're using on this project, and why each one matters for performance, comfort, and sustainability. And that's just monday. You'll see us installing and detailing our interior vapor barrier, installing our strapping, and even talking stucco. This was a big week!

Here's what we used for insulation, and why...

🔸 TimberHP TimberFill (blown wood fiber) – A vapor-open, carbon-smart option perfect for our roof assemblies. This product is made in the USA, plant-based, won't offgas, won't trap moisture, is bug resistant, surpasses all of our smoke and flame spread requirements, AND arrives to our jobsite carbon negative. We needed an insulation that could conform to our irregular joist bays and we generally avoid spray foam like the plague. It's also worth noting that the house had blown-in insulation installed when we got the project and we didn't find any rot or damage.

🔸 Fiberglass batts – Affordable and effective for soundproofing interior walls. A small upgrade that makes a big difference in quality of life.

🔸 Mineral wool – Solid performance in masonry walls, the basement, and anywhere we need moisture resistance and fire protection. Eventually we'll start incorporating more wood fiber batts but for now, our insulation team was set up for mineral wool.

We're trying something new with this series. It's going to be vlog-style' videos showing our weekly progress and setbacks. While there's an order of operations we follow, very rarely is construction linear, especially when restoring these historical townhouses. During any given week we're doing 5-10 different tasks. As a self-performing general contractor, a lot of the details fall on us to execute perfectly.
