When I was growing up in the 70's, the local TV station would show a re-run of the original series of Star Trek every weekday afternoon, shortly after school. It was personal tradition to settle in for an hour of sci-fi escapism before tending to dinner and homework.
There are plenty of stories about how Star Trek inspired kids to learn more about science, engineering and space, Sometimes, they would turn those topics into careers as engineers, scientists or even astronauts. No small number of people working on the Space Shuttle program in the 1980's were inspired by Star Trek in the late 1960's.
I was no different, although I never managed to work directly on a space-related program in my career. But as a nerdy, technically-minded kid, Star Trek was inspiring stuff. And while I might have found myself doodling silly starship designs on a napkin, others took their enthusiasm for the technology of that future universe A LOT farther.
In this video, we take a close look at a fan-generated item published in 1984 - a mock future naval industry journal filled with starship plans and articles inspired by Star Trek. I was on the mailing lists (that's postal mail, mind you!) of several companies that were in the business of creating Trek-related blueprints and technical manuals, which I found to be perfect companions to what I saw in the actual TV show every afternoon.
How about you? If you write, did you ever write a short story inspired by your favorite TV show, a story that no one ever read? If you like to draw, did you ever make up your own starship? Or how about a cool sword or a double-handed axe weapon, inspired by your character in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign? Or perhaps a vivid landscape sketch of a faraway land, with multiple moons in the sky? How about a song? Or poetry? Please share with us in the comments!
This video includes the following triggers: pointing, tracing, page turning and soft speaking.
