The internet is full of web sites and apps that can tell us something interesting or useful if the app knows where we are located. What is the closest theater playing my favorite movie? How far do I need to drive to get the best thai food? Is there a traffic jam that will make me take a different route to work?
Interestingly, this ability isn't restricted to the worlds of electricity and the internet. Sometimes, you can get useful information from a simple mechanical device by "telling" it where on the earth we are located, too.
The little sundial compass in this video normally sits quietly on the mantle above our fireplace. It's not an antique, nor is it valuable at all. It's more a decoration than anything, and it has a look that is equal parts nautical and steampunk. I like it.
Like the internet, it can tell us something useful too. All it needs to know is where we are located. By manipulating it in certain ways, and by knowing a couple of nerdy pieces of information about our location on the planet, this little fellow can tell us what time it is on a sunny day. No electricity or wi-fi required! ;-)
Join me as we consider this old-world item, listening to its subtle sounds as we talk about how it works. We'll also get our nerd on by talking a bit about latitude and magnetic declination. Sleepy yet?
This video includes the following triggers: soft speaking, close-up tinkering, detailed hand movements, and subtle mechanical sounds.
