The song Maiya Morie Barse Baras Raswari is a Hindustani folk song of the Surinamese community in the Netherlands and Surinam. It was originally sung b y the late singer Ramdew Chaitoe, who was the leading vocalist of the Baithak Gana genre of his time. His music has popularized the genre throughout Surinam, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and other parts of the West-Indies as well as the Netherlands, USA and Canada. He has influenced many Surinami Hindustani musicians to embrace their musical heritage.
The song is about the rain, which is worshipped in the form of a Motherly Goddess. This finds its way back to the times where rural people were largely dependent on the rain for their agricultural needs.
I have chosen this song as part of the Raga Vani concert which was held at Theater De Nieuwe Regentes in the Hague on Februari 5th 2023. My fellow musicans were Kries Malhoe on guitar and Dilip Dhoenmoen on percussion.
