Come join us on this beautiful scenic winter drive up to the Kolob Canyons Viewpoint and hike in southern Utah. We will take several road pullouts and look at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, Majestic Red Peaks and 2,000 foot cliff walls. The park highlights are the peaks of Navajo sandstone, canyon streams and cascading falls, and over 20 miles of hiking trail new experiences and stunning scenery await you around every bend.
We also take a hike at the road end on the Timber Creek Overlook Trail. The trail begins at the Kolob Canyons Viewpoint, 5 miles up the Kolob Canyon Road. The trail is snowed over and is like walking on an ice rink. Will we make it to the Timber Creek Overlook?
The Kolob Canyons truly are a unique area of Zion National Park. With soaring peaks of Navajo sandstone, canyon streams and cascading falls, and over 20 miles of hiking trail new experiences and stunning scenery await you around every bend.
The Kolob Canyons district of Zion National Park is located at Exit 40 on Interstate 15, 40 miles north of Zion Canyon and 17 miles south of Cedar City. A five-mile scenic drive along the Kolob Canyons Road allows visitors to view the crimson canyons and gain access to various trails and scenic viewpoints.
There is a $35 entry fee, but with this pass you can visit Kolob, Zion or any National Park within 7 days. If you have a national park pass, like we do, then it's free. We used our Annual Pass, so it was a cheap drive up. Plan about 3 hours for your visit, but if you zoom up and back, it will be less than an hour.
Tip: If you are only going to drive up to see the red cliffs and not do the hikes, it might not be worth the price, just drive to St. George and look to the west, plenty of red rocks for free.
Hours: Spring and Summer hours: 8am - 5pm; Fall and Winter hours: 8am - 4:30pm. Back-country Desk at Kolob Canyon Visitor Center - Summer, Spring and Fall hours: 8am - 5pm; Winter hours: 8am - 4:30pm. Zion Human History Museum - Open daily, closed November to March.
Here in the northwest corner of the park, narrow parallel box canyons are cut into the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, forming majestic peaks and 2,000 foot cliff walls. Whether you come to view the panoramic landscape from the scenic drive, hike into one of the majestic canyons, or begin a multi-day adventure into the Zion Wilderness, the Kolob Canyons of Zion has something special for everyone to experience.
The Kolob Canyons truly are a unique area of Zion National Park and are designated as Wilderness and are protected for their pristine and primitive environments. Hiking in Kolob Canyons allows visitors the opportunity for solitude and tranquility in a scenic desert setting.
