Stovetop Candied Yams Recipe
Ingredients:
• 2 lb. sweet potatoes
• 1 stick (½ cup) butter
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 1 cup white sugar
• 2 tsp. cinnamon
• 1 tsp. nutmeg
• ½ tsp. allspice powder
• ¼ tsp. ginger powder
• Thumb-sized piece of ginger, sliced
• ¼ tsp. salt
• 2 tbsp. vanilla extract
• 1 orange, juiced
Instructions:
1. Prep the Sweet Potatoes:
Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into ½-inch thick slices.
2. Start the Slurry:
In a large, deep skillet or pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice powder, ginger powder, sliced ginger, salt, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
3. Add the Potatoes:
Place the raw sweet potato slices directly into the slurry. Stir gently to coat all the slices evenly.
4. Cook the Potatoes:
Cover the skillet or pot with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the potatoes simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and spooning the syrup over the potatoes to ensure even cooking.
5. Thicken the Syrup:
Remove the lid and cook uncovered for an additional 5–7 minutes, allowing the syrup to thicken and coat the potatoes. Stir gently to avoid breaking the slices.
6. Serve:
Once the sweet potatoes are tender and glazed in the thickened syrup, remove from heat. Serve warm as a side dish or dessert!
