Neighbor's Phone Captures Final Seconds Before Uvalde Massacre Begins

A neighbor heard what he thought was construction. Then he looked out his window and saw someone walking into Robb Elementary with a gun. He grabbed his phone and hit record.

Jose Hill lived directly across from the school. On May 24, 2022, he captured approximately two seconds of footage showing the shooter entering the west side entrance. That video is now evidence in the trial of Adrian Gonzales, the first officer on scene who prosecutors say failed to engage the gunman. The jury sees what a civilian with a phone managed to document while an armed officer was nearby.

The defense maintains Gonzales never saw the shooter and was on the opposite side of the building. This brief testimony establishes the video evidence. The question remains: what was happening on the other side of those walls?

On May 24, 2022, a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers. For 77 minutes, children called 911 while nearly 400 officers waited in the hallways and outside.

Gonzales arrived before the shooter entered the building. He was a school district officer who had helped teach active shooter training two months earlier. Surveillance footage places him within 200 feet of the gunman when the first shots were fired.

A grand jury indicted Gonzales on 29 counts of child endangerment in June 2024. The trial was moved to Corpus Christi. Judge Sid Harle presides. DA Christina Mitchell prosecutes. Nico LaHood defends.
