Security Footage Proves Shooter Was Hidden When Gonzales Arrived at School

He was hiding. Security footage from the funeral home across the street shows the shooter ducked down between parked cars as Gonzales drove through the teacher parking lot. The defense just proved their client never had a clear shot at seeing him.

Clavia Rodriguez worked at Hillcrest Funeral Home directly across from Robb Elementary. She heard the crash, ran outside with coworkers, and watched the shooter pull a rifle from his truck and open fire on them. She retreated to her office window and kept watching. She saw him jump the fence, walk slowly toward the school, remove his cap, shake out his hair, and crouch behind a white car to reload. When a white vehicle drove through the lot, he was hidden between parked cars. Not standing in the open. Hiding.

The defense showed the footage. The prosecution asked zero questions on cross. Rodriguez also testified that when officers arrived at the funeral home, she and a coworker told them "he's already inside" and pointed to the west side of the building. Those officers got back in their car and drove around to the front.

On May 24, 2022, a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers. For 77 minutes, children called 911 while nearly 400 officers waited in the hallways and outside.

Gonzales arrived before the shooter entered the building. He was a school district officer who had helped teach active shooter training two months earlier. Surveillance footage places him within 200 feet of the gunman when the first shots were fired.

A grand jury indicted Gonzales on 29 counts of child endangerment in June 2024. The trial was moved to Corpus Christi. Judge Sid Harle presides. DA Christina Mitchell prosecutes. Nico LaHood defends.
