What if one school assembly could change the way a child sees disability for the rest of their life?
In this episode of The Nonprofit Podcast Network, I sit down with Meghan Adamski, Executive Director of A Touch of Understanding (ATOU), and longtime volunteer Karen Parsegian to celebrate 30 years of building empathy in classrooms across Northern California.
ATOU has reached more than 157,000 students in 10 counties with a hands-on program that includes:
Wheelchairs, white canes, and prosthetic limbs
Lived-experience speakers who invite ANY question
Activities that help students better understand autism, dyslexia, A.D.H.D., and more
A powerful “dark meal” experience that lets participants feel what it’s like to eat without sight
We talk about:
How a five-year-old’s lesson in respect became a three-decade movement
Why kids remember this program years—sometimes decades—later
What it feels like for volunteers with disabilities to finally be wanted for their experience
How ATOU plans to grow from a regional program into a true movement for inclusion
