When restoration carpenter Daniel Hoffman receives an urgent call from Father Brennan at St. Bartholomew's Church in New Fane, Wisconsin, he expects another routine repair job. What he finds instead defies explanation—a wooden cross in the church basement has transformed into something impossible. Polished black as obsidian. Cold as ice. And changing everything around it.

Built in 1869 by German immigrants on land sacred to the Ojibwe and Ho-Chunk people, St. Bartholomew's was constructed over something that should never have been disturbed. The founding priest, Father Wilhelm Geisler, believed he was sealing away ancient spirits when he placed that cross over a hidden cave system. He thought he was protecting future generations.

He was wrong.

As Daniel and Father Brennan dig into the church's dark history, they uncover journal entries revealing a terrifying truth: the cross wasn't sealing anything. It was marking it. Naming it. Making it real. And for over 150 years, every prayer, every Mass, every moment of faith poured into that church has been feeding something below. Something patient. Something ancient. Something that's finally ready to rise.

This is a story about thin places—where the barrier between worlds grows weak. About the danger of building over sacred ground. About water spirits from Ojibwe legend that existed before humans walked this land. And about the terrible realization that some doors, once opened, can never be closed again.

Based on real Wisconsin history, authentic Native American beliefs about the Mishibizhiw (underwater panthers), and the Gothic Revival churches that German immigrants built throughout the Midwest in the 1800s.
