When electrical engineer Luca Moretti received a call from the Vatican to investigate mysterious power failures in their underground archives, he thought it would be just another job. He was wrong.

Deep beneath Vatican City, in a reinforced bunker built over ancient Roman catacombs, something has been sealed for nearly 2,000 years. The Church has guarded this secret since the destruction of Jerusalem's Second Temple in 70 AD—a black basalt doorway covered in ancient inscriptions, hidden in the deepest vaults where even archivists fear to tread.

Six weeks ago, the Vatican opened the Third Section for the first time since 1823. Three archivists entered. When they emerged 47 minutes later, they were no longer whole. One stopped speaking forever. One lost her memory. One died three weeks later with his eyes frozen open in terror.

Now the power failures are happening every night. The cold is spreading. And the gateway is opening again.

Luca thought he could find a rational explanation. He thought his engineering expertise would solve the mystery. But when he stepped through that ancient doorway, he discovered something that defies all rational explanation—a space between Heaven and Hell where consciousness itself becomes food for entities that have existed since before time began.

Some doors are sealed for a reason. Some secrets are kept to protect humanity from truths too terrible to comprehend.
