Vancouver Island Storm Watching: The Fate of a Capsized Boston Whaler near Ucluelet and Tofino

Last weekend a Boston Whaler (small fishing boat) capsized on the coast near Ucluelet. While there were some fairly serious injuries everyone on board survived with the help of witnesses and first responders. The following day I was able to help recover some important personal items for the victims by surveying the area with my drone.

A couple days after the accident a massive storm blew in leaving the fate of the beached boat in question. In this video we watch the storm from a few locations around Ucluelet including Big Beach, Amphitrite Point and the Wild Pacific Trail. We also check in on the boat hoping it isn't battered to pieces by the storm.

"By morning the storm had left the boat batter and pushed even further along the rocky coastline
but like it's passengers a few night earlier it had come through the ordeal in better shape than one might expect

Some of those passengers have already begun to help with the cleanup and in conversations with me have expressed great gratitude to the individuals who helped pull them out of the danger.

Theirs is only one of many tales a disaster and survival from a region known as the graveyard of the Pacific. The nearby lighthouse was erected after 36 sailors lost their lives in the area on Christmas Day in 1905. “Pass Of Melfort” a street named for that doomed vessel is only a few hundred meters from the location where the capsized boat washed ashore

While I might have found their cell phone generations of lighthouse keepers, lifeboat crews, search and rescue, coastguard, first responders and everyday people have saved countless lives in the area. Let's try to respect their efforts by ensuring we're taking safety seriously in and near the water."
