Twinkle holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry from Colorado State University and currently works at Abstrax Tech team as a research and development scientist, utilizing experience gained from working at the Center for Disease Control and at a California compliance analytical testing lab. She is presenting on a research paper that sought to uncover the chemical origins of the “skunk-like” aroma in cannabis. The authors measured the aromatic properties of cannabis flowers and concentrated extracts using 2D GC-MS-TOF, flame ionization detection, and sulfur chemiluminescence. They discovered a new family of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) containing the prenyl (3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl) functional group that is responsible for this scent. These results shed light on the chemical origins of the characteristic aroma of cannabis and how volatile sulfur compound production evolves during plant growth.
