The History:
In February 1916, the infamous Battle of Verdun started with an overwhelming artillery bombardment by the Germans. The Germans were able to advance for a couple of kilometers but were soon met with heavy French resistance. However, the fortress of Douamont was taken by the Germans without having to fire a single bullet, since the French garrison had evacuated the place prior to the attack. But the French wouldn't just accept the loss of the fort and ordered several attacks to retake it. It wasn't until October that they managed to recapture it, after the Germans had been heavily weakened by a fire and been pounded by railway guns for days. The Battle of Verdun raged on until December, after which little to no gains had been made by any side. Verdun would become a symbol of the horrors and the pointlessness of the Great War.

The picture at the end of the video was taken by me at the Douamont Ossuary cemetery which I visited during my bike-trip along the Western Front last summer.
