Auckland has the raw ingredients to be a world-class innovation city: a diverse, well-educated population, strong global links to India and China, leading universities, and a growing deep-tech sector. But the ecosystem is still too fragmented.
Around the world, innovation is driven by cities - not countries. Agglomeration effects, global connectivity, and dense networks of collaboration are what turn good ideas into scalable businesses.
What’s missing in Auckland is coordination. The potential is there, but the parts aren’t yet working together. To compete with cities like Toronto, Paris, and Tel Aviv, Auckland needs to build a unified, inclusive innovation system—one that connects founders, researchers, investors, and institutions, and speaks with one voice to central government.
It’s overdue.
